Ruian lieson the southeast coast of Zhejiang and is an important modern industrial and commercial city in theprovince. It is also a central city with profound history and culture in the southof the Wenzhou metropolitan area.

The cityis in a coastal hilly area, with70% ofmountains, 20% ofrivers, andonly 10% of arable land. The terrain slopes from west to east, andthe northwest area is hillywith an altitude of 600 meters. The western mountain areas are covered with66,000 hectares of forest with a coverage rate of 32.3%. The southern region,characterized by low hills, is mainly an extension of the South YandangMountains. Itstretches eastward to Da'aoMountainand then descendsinto the sea, forming the NorthDragon Islands on the East China Sea continental shelf. The eastern coastal areais a plain formed by alluvial deposits and tidal flats, with a flat terrain and fertile land, which makes Ruian a famous "land of fish and rice."
