Dongtou is one of the 14 island districts (counties) in China. It had been a county, and was re-designated as a city district in July 2015, with a total area of 2,862 m2, including 2,709 m2of sea area and 153 m2 of land. It has 302 islands, including 14 inhabited. Dongtou features the following: (1)An extensive marine area with abundant marine resources, including a significant aquaculture area of 7.45 thousand acres; (2) a long coastline of 351 km, including the core areas of Wenzhou Port, which has opened sea routes to destinations like Taiwan, Russia, and the United States, wirh the Zhangyu International Cruise Port under operation; (3) rich tourism resources: Renowned as the "Hometown of Chinese Qixi Culture," "Hometown of Chinese Fishermen's Painting," and the "Island of Chinese Poetry", it is the only 4A-level tourist destination in the country named after a county, and has received over 20 national-level accolades. It is designated as a National Marine Park and one of the second batch of the Bases for Innovating & Practising the Concept of lucid Waters and Lush Mountains being Invaluable Assets, among others; (4) abundant seafood resources: Dongtou Fishing Ground, home to over 300 species of fish, shrimp, and shellfish, is the second-largest in Zhejiang, covering an area of over 4,800 km2 , which is known as the hometown of Chinese sargassum fusiforme, seaweed, and natural yellow croaker; (5) unique Haixia Culture: Dongtou is the hometown of Haixia (a famous women militia member ’s name),who devoted her life to the border defence, and became popular due to a movie named after her. Thus there is a Dongtou Vanguard Women's Militia Memorial Hall on the island, which serves as a national defense and patriotism education base, and a national classic red tourism destination. |
