Situated in the southeast of Zhejiang Province, Lucheng District is the seat of the Wenzhou Municipal Peoples’ Government, and and under the jurisdiction of the City. Lucheng has been a thriving commercial center since ancient times, known as the “famous town of Dongou State. It was lauded as “A city by the sea with its prosperity always considered to be next to Hangzhou” in a poem by the poet Yang Pan during the Southern Song Dynasty. Backing mountains and facing the Oujiang River, Lucheng is crisscrossed by waters and dotted by several hills, enjoying the reputation of picturesque beauty. Jiangxin Islet with gorgeous scenery, as one of the four famous solitary islands in China, sits in the middle of the Oujiang River. Lucheng has a long history of literary prosperity and has produced many men of letters , such as Xie Lingyun, founder of Chinese landscape poetry during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Ye Shi, a representative of the Yongjia School during the Southern Song Dynasty, and Xia Chengtao, a contemporary master of poetry. It is also said that the calligraphy sage Wang Xizhi left behind relics such as the “Ink Pool” here. Lucheng (a “deer city” literally) was originally part of Yongjia County(present Wenzhou urban area), and a legend goes that a white deer with a flower in its mouth crossed Yongjia County during its construction in the first year of the Taining period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (323), hence its name. It has been the seat of local various administrations throughouthistory. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Wenzhou Prefecture-level City was established and Yongjia County was re-designated with its location outside the city’s urban area. When the city’s administrative divisions were adjusted once more in 1981, its urban area was named Wenzhou Urban District, and renamed Lucheng District in 1984. |
