Wenzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was initially established in 1923 as Yongjia Pu’an TCM Clinic and Pharmacy by industrialists including Cai Guanfu, Chen Ziming, and Tao Lvchen through fund-raising. It was initially a medical charity aimed to “help the poor with medical service and medicine”. After over 100 years of development, the hospital has evolved into a national Grade A TCM hospital, holding honorary titles including China’s National “Civilization Unit”, Zhejiang “Safe Hospital”, Zhejiang “Green Hospital”, “National Demonstration Units of Conservation-oriented Public Institutions”, “National Demonstration Hospital for Improving Medical Services”, “National Pioneer in Industrial Information Integration”, and “Ink-scented Unit”(encouraging reading and artistic creation). With a profound commitment to the practice, teaching, scientific research, training, health preservation, and healthcare of traditional Chinese medicine, the Hospital has been acknowledged as the “National Key TCM Hospital Construction Project” and the “Zhejiang Pilot Hospital for Modern Hospital Management”. Remarkably, the Hospital achieved Grade A in performance evaluations of national tertiary public hospitals for four consecutive years from 2018 to 2021.

The Hospital has four national key specialties of TCM, namely Gynecology, Nephrology, Rehabilitation, and Psychiatry, and nine Zhejiang provincial key specialties of TCM, i.e. Gynecology, Nephrology, Geriatric Rehabilitation with Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Liver Disease, Acupuncture Rehabilitation, Encephalopathy, Gastroenterology (Spleen and Stomach Diseases), Orthopedics, and Nursing. The Hospital has maintained a leading role in the development and construction of TCM in the region, and has made a solid step towards the goal of building a modern national Grade A TCM hospital which is among “the first-class hospitals in Zhejiang province and well-known in China”.
