Education

By the end of 2023, there were a total of 546 primary schools in the city, with an enrollment of 118,800 students and a total of 649,600 students. The enrollment rate for primary school-age children was 100%. The per capita building area for primary school students was 9.77 m2. There were 324 junior high schools in the city, with an enrollment of 101,900 students and a total of 296,500 students. The per capita building area for secondary school students was 20.63 m2. There were 40 secondary vocational education schools, with an enrollment of 32,500 students and a total of 94,300 students. The regular high schools totaled 102, with an enrollment of 49,400 students and a total of 142,900 students, turning out 43,900 graduates. The city boasted 11 regular colleges and universities (including one independent undergraduate college), with 151,800 students totally. There were 61,900 full-time teachers in primary and secondary schools, and 6,500 full-time secondary vocational education teachers (excluding technical schools). The city had 1,222 kindergartens with 262,200 children totally.

Science and Technology

By the end of 2023, the city boasted: (1) 1 national hi-tech zone, 2 provincial hi-tech zones and 6 provincial creative hi-tech zones; (2)4 national incubators, 1 university science park, 16 mass innovation spaces and 4 star creation spaces at national level, 12 incubators, 54 mass innovation spaces and 4 star creation spaces at provincial level; (3)18 sci-tech enterprise incubators, 41 mass innovation spaces at municipal level; (5)14 provincial industrial innovation service complexes; (4) 239 provincial enterprise research institutes (including 25 key ones and 9 key agricultural ones), 469 provincial hi-tech enterprise R&D centers and 1,661 municipal enterprise R&D centers.

In the year of 2023, high-tech enterprises increased 766 and totaled 4326, and provincial small and medium-sized sci-tech enterprises increased 2344 and totaled 14,155. In the same year, the city’s number of authorized patents reached 48,700, including 3,778 invention patents. Standard of “Made in Zhejiang”increased 77 and totaled 433.

Culture and Art

By the end of 2023, there were 185 cultural stations, 12 cultural centers, 58 museums, 13 public libraries and a large number of smaller-sized ones with varied names:156“City Studies”, 78 “Common People’s Libraries” and 272 “Cultural Spaces” in the city. The 13 libraries had a collection of 17,536,700 books, an increase of 920,600 books YoY. As of the end of last year, the city had 4 projects (Yongjia Kunqu Opera, Yueqing Fine Paper-cutting, Ruian Dongyuan Movable Wooden Type Printing, and Taishun Timber Arch Lounge Bridge Building Techniques) entering the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) List of the UNESCO. Besides, there were 35, 159 and 779 projects entering the national, provincial and municipal ICH lists respectively, and the city owned 966 ICH protection units. National, provincial and municipal representative ICH inheritors amounted to 37, 230 and 933 respectively, with related inheriting organizations and mass groups totaling 14 and 20. With the first batch of achievements of The Wenzhou Classics released, and the tour performance of“Operas from Wenzhou " received rave reviews, Wenzhou was also selected into the annual list of cities with influence along the Maritime Silk Road (China), created as a national copyright demonstration city, and rated as the third "City of Chinese Arts and Crafts" in China.

Medical Treatment and Health 

By the end of 2023, Wenzhou had a total of 6084 medical and health institutions, including 171 hospitals, 537 community health service centers, 2,134 village clinics, 510 out-patient clinics and other health centers and medical clinics totaling 2,653. The city owned 50,119 beds at medical and health institutions and 87,281 health workers (a rise of 6.0% YoY). Among them, there were 37,043 practitioners with a title of assistant doctors and 38,241 registered nurses, up 5.2% and 7.5%  YoY respectively. The total number of medical and health institution visits throughout the year reached 104,053,000 up 5.2% over the previous year. The mortality rate of registered pregnant women was 3.02 per 100,000, the mortality rate of children under five and infants were 2.68‰ and 1.66‰ respectively.

Sports

In 2023, Wenzhou successfully hosted football and dragon boat competitions, as well as the torch relay for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. Throughout the year, Wenzhou athletes achieved 4 world championships, with Ding Liren becoming the first Chinese "World Chess Champion" in international chess. Wenzhou athletes excelled at the Asian Games, winning 18 gold, 5 silver, and 2 copper medals, ranking first among all prefecture-level cities in China in terms of gold medals.

The city also launched the "Welcome to the Asian Games, Enjoy the Events, and Explore Wenzhou" campaign, hosting 133 large-scale sports events and 45 national and above-level events and activities. Our teams participated in the First National Student (Youth) Games, securing 3 gold, 10 silver, and 9 copper medals. Additionally, we organized 2,105 community sports events, cultural hall sports events, and national fitness conferences.

The city continued to enhance its public fitness facilities, adding 10 village-level fitness squares, 15 cage football pitches, 21 multi-functional sports fields in communities, 65 public fitness centers, 8 parks with sports facilities, 10 three-on-three basketball courts, and a 150-km hiking trail for fitness. The implementation of the Wenzhou Regulations on Promoting National Fitness led to the expansion of sports areas by over 2.1537 million square meters.

Moreover, the issuance of sports lottery tickets reached 3.675 billion yuan in 2023, a significant increase of 39.6% compared to the previous year. This growth reflects the city's ongoing commitment to promoting sports culture and enhancing public engagement in physical activities.
