On April 14, a design review meeting for the exhibition gardens of the Wenzhou Garden Expo Park was held in Wenzhou, gathering experts from across China in gardening, planning, and architecture to offer professional guidance for the project’s advancement.

Currently, the construction of the Wenzhou Garden Expo Park is picking up pace. The pile foundation construction for major structures has been largely completed, and the park is scheduled for full completion by the end of December.

Experts spoke highly of the exhibition gardens design proposals, praising their distinct themes, refined cultural aesthetics, and ecological vision. They also proposed improvements in design details, functional layout, and coordination with future operations. Regarding plant selection, native species such as the banyan tree were preserved, and a natural layout featuring themed plant clusters was adopted to allow ecological succession—an approach that earned unanimous approval.

During the review, the design consortium gave a detailed presentation on the “Zhejiang Mountains and Waters” City Exhibition Garden. How to effectively plan the 30,000-square-meter garden while highlighting the unique characteristics of Zhejiang's various cities was a central focus for both designers and experts. The design aims to showcase each city's historical heritage, traditional garden architecture, distinctive plant species, and urban spirit. Among them, Wenzhou's exhibition garden—named “Ouyue Garden”—covers 12,533 square meters and features the theme “Ancient Charm of Ouyue, and Everlasting of Landscape.” Inspired by the classical painting “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains”, it adopts a dual-zone layout with “two gardens in the east and west, six scenic areas in total.” The eastern zone emphasizes craftsmanship and garden aesthetics, while the western zone highlights the natural beauty of Wenzhou.

With less than a year remaining before the opening of the Garden Expo in April 2026, experts recommended that the exhibition garden design should be locally optimized based on the existing design, clarifying the primary and secondary areas and core highlights of the entire garden, strengthening the overall image and memory points of the park, and ultimately creating an urban garden exemplar characterized by “scenic value, immersive experience, and practical utility”.

To date, the Zhejiang Housing and Urban-Rural Development Department has conducted six rounds of expert reviews and provided feedback on proposals for 34 city exhibition gardens, continuing to improve design quality.

Among domestic participants, 10 cities (regions)—including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Xiamen—have completed site selection and launched design proposals. Beijing, Suzhou, and Guangzhou will showcase representative garden styles from northern China, Jiangnan, and Lingnan respectively. On the international front, 11 plots have been allocated. Concept designs for gardens representing the UK, Canada, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Uzbekistan, and Thailand were contributed by overseas Wenzhou business associations. Notably, the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) will debut a unique garden at the expo.

With the theme “Poetic Landscapes and Shared Green Living,” the Wenzhou Garden Expo boasts five core principles of being People’s, International, Pioneering, Cultural, and Citywide. Located in Ouhai District, the Garden Expo Park will feature both Chinese and global garden styles, offering visitors an immersive experience of “exploring world gardens in Wenzhou.”
